When Tamaki was younger, he spent most of his life with his mother in her family mansion. The servants referred to him with his French given name, René. His mother's health took a turn for the worst, making her bedridden for days at a time. In these days when she was ill, Tamaki took up the piano and was found to be extraordinarily talented at playing it. He played for his mother when she was ill, because it pleased her. When she wasn't sick, they spent most of their time together, playing games and watching DVDs that his father would send them from Japan. A deal was then struck between his mother and strict grandmother to send him to live in Japan. However, because of his illegitimacy, his strict grandmother forces him to live in the secondary mansion, away from herself and his father.

Tamaki normally behaves in a flamboyant, egotistical, almost princely manner, but in all actuality is dedicated to his studies, friends, family, and, of course, his beloved Host Club. He is outspoken most times, but also very naive for his age. He has a hard time realizing his romantic feelings, while the rest of the club are completely aware of them. He acts in a princely, eloquent manner around his guests, but tends to get tongue-tied, be attention-seeking, and get embarrassed easily when he is not hosting. No matter how childish he can be at times, he is quite intelligent, coming in just behind Kyoya in their class rankings. He is highly intelligent, because he is often found slacking off rather than studying. Though he can baffle you with brilliant insight at times, it is usually followed by a quick revert back into his child-like personality.
