Sora grew up on the world known as Destiny Islands, along with his very best friend Riku. Sora and Riku have been best friends for as long as they can remember. When they were about five or six years old, the boys were laying out beneath the stars on the island on which they resided. While they are star-gazing, Sora becomes sad, saying he feels someone's heart hurting somewhere out there. Riku encourages him to comfort the heart. It is Ventus's heart calling out to Sora's in agony after a long strenuous battle with darkness. Ventus's heart needs a safe place for his heart to reside while it is healing. Sora opens up his own heart to invite Ventus's into himself. This grants Sora the ability to wield the Keyblade, though he is unaware of it at the time. A new girl named Kairi, had shown up on the island shortly before, on a raft, no one knew her and she had no where to go. The mayor took her in. The girl soon became good friends with both of the young boys and the three of them were inseparable. Ten years passed peacefully on the island, now the three of them decided to make a raft of their own and set sail to other worlds. After preparing the raft for sailing, Sora went home that night only to be greeted by the sounds of a terrible storm brewing outside. Sora immediately goes outside to check on their raft. Only to be greeted by swarms of those strange creatures that had appeared in his dream a few days before. He made his way to the small island that was connected to their own with a bridge from the Seaside Shack to find Riku fully embracing the darkness, Sora was drug through a dark portal to find himself waken up by Pluto in a world unknown to him.
